New study on rail freight in international transport

24.01.2023

In Poland in international transport more than 86.2 m tonnes of goods were carried in 2021. The transport performance reached 24.8 bn tonne-km. It accounted for more than 35% of the total weight and more than 44.3% of the transport perfromance of all freight transport in Poland.

Similarly to domestic transport, international transport was dominated by bulk commodities such as coke, briquettes and refined petroleum products, metal ores, mining and quarrying products and coal. A large share of the market was held by various goods included in the group 'unidentifiable goods', transported mostly in containers. In 2021 - despite the pandemic restrictions still in place – the total weight carried rose in import, export and transit, as compared to 2020.

The growth of e-commerce market caused a rise in demand for transport, especially in international transport and spedition. International transport is an important part of rail transport in Poland. Thus in order to continue a smooth operation of trade, it is important to improve infrastructure parameters. From a carrier's point of view, journey time is crucial, as efficient and regular connections affect the profitability and competitiveness of the services provided - notes Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

In international transport it is important to ensure adequate journey times and also to minimise train delays, especially at border crossings. In order to increase volume of freight, it is crucial to modernise the contact infrastructure at border crossings by rising the capacity parameters of individual crossings. Seaports play an important role in international trade. To maintain it, it is necessary to ensure accessibility and adequate capacity on the routes leading to them.

Our new Analysis of rail freight transport in international traffic is based on statistical data and information at the disposal of the Office of Rail Transport, collected as part of the monitoring proces of railway companies operating in Poland. Other data sources were also used in the study to analyse, i.a., the situation in seaports.
