Rail transport in November 2022

Rail operators carried 31.4 m passengers in November 2022, which is 6.3 m more compared to November 2021 and 2 m more compared to pre-pandemic November 2019. In November 2022 20.9 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail - 0.5 m tonnes less than a year earlier.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In November 31.4 m passengers used rail services. Compared to November 2021, 6.3 m more passengers chose rail (+25%). The transport performance amounted to 1.9 bn pass-km, which is 0.5 bn pass-km (+33.6%) more than in November 2021. A smaller increase was recorded in the operational performance, which reached 15 m train-km - 0.4 m train-km more (+2.4%) than a year earlier. November's results in passenger numbers, transport and operational performance were the highest values recorded for this month in the last 10 years. The average distance travelled by a passenger in November was 62.1 km, which is 4 km longer (+6.9%) than in the previous year. 

When compared to the record-breaking October, rail operators transported 1.4 m fewer passengers (-4.3%) in November 2022, the transport performance fell by 0.1 bn pass-km (-5.5%) and the operational performance was 0.5 m train-km (-3.1%) lower. The average distance travelled by a passenger was also slightly down compared to October, by 0.8 km (-1.3%).

Overall, from January to November 2022, more than 313 m passengers used rail services, the transport performance was 21.8 bn pass-km and the operational performance was 170.2 m train-km. Compared to the same period in 2021, there was an increase in the nubmer of passengers by 90.7 m passengers (+40.8%), in the transport performance by 7.4 bn pass-km (+51%) and in the operational performance by 7.8 m train-km (+4.8%).

Till November 2019 the rail operators carried 5.1 m fewer passengers (-1.7%), the transport performance was 1.5 bn pass-km lower (-7.4%) and the operational performance was 14.1 m train-km lower (-9%) than in November 2022.

FREIGHT TRANSPORT

The total weight of goods carried in November was 20.9 m tonnes. It was 0.5 m tonnes (-2.1%) lower than in November 2021. In November 2022 the transport performance and the operational performance were higher than in November 2021. The transport performance in November 2022 reached 5.5 bn tonne-km, increasing by 0.5 bn tonne-km (9.6%) compared to November 2021. The operational performance reached 7.5 m train-km, increasing year-on-year by 0.5 m train-km (6.4%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods in November 2022 was 261 km and 28 km longer than in November 2021.

There was also a month-on-month decrease in the weight of transported goods. In November 2022 0.3 m tonnes (-1.6%) less were carried than in October 2022. The transport performance was lower by 15.7 m tonne-km (-0.3%) and the operational performance by 0.05 m train-km (-0.6%). However, the average haul distance increased by 4 km.

229.6 m tonnes of goods were transported in eleven months in 2022 - 6.5 m (2.9%) more than in 2021. The transport performance amounted to 57.5 bn tonne-km (an increase of 6.3 bn tonne-km,  12.2%), while the operational performance rose by 4.7 m train-km (6.3%), amounting to 79.8 m train-km.
