Rail transport in October 2023

More than 34.5 m people travelled by rail in October 2023. This is an increase by 5.3% compared to the previous year and a record value in the monthly statistics published by the Office of Rail Transport since 2012. In rail freight, the transport performance exceeded 5.5 bn tonne-km, a value 0.6% higher than in October 2022. The weight of goods transported by rail operators - 21 m tonnes - is the second highest monthly result since the beginning of this year.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

More than 34.5 m passengers used rail services in October 2023, which is 1.7 m more (+5.3%) than in October 2022. This is also the highest result in our monthly statistics for more than a decade. In the transport performance, which amounted to almost 2.2 bn pass-km, the increase compared to October 2022 was 0.1 bn pass-km (+5.9%). The operational performance was 16.3 m train-km, 0.8 m train-km higher (+5.3%) compared to October 2022.  The average distance travelled by a rail passenger last month was 63.3 km - 0.3 km longer than a year earlier.

October 2023 results were better for the vast majority of rail companies than in September in case of passenger numbers. When comparing these values on a month-on-month basis, 2.4 m passengers more (+7.4%) used rail services. In the transport performance there was a slight decrease by 0.02 bn pass-km (-1.1%). The operational performance was 0.6 m train-km (+3.8%) higher than the month before. The average distance travelled by a rail passenger was 5.5 km shorter when compared on a month-on-month basis.

In total, almost 310.7 m people travelled by rail since the beginning of the year, the transport performance was 21.7 bn pass-km and the operational performance amounted to 159.2 m train-km.

When compared to January-October 2022, it is an increase by 28.9 m in the number of passengers (+10.2%), by 1.8 bn pass-km (+9.3%) in the transport performance and by 3.9 m train-km (+2.5%) in the operational performance.

RAIL FREIGHT

In October 2023 in rail freight the value of transport performance was higher than in 2022 and the values of the total weight of goods carried and the operational performance were slightly lower. Overall, the transport performance exceeded 5.5 bn tonne-km, 0.03 bn tonne-km more (+0.6%) than in the previous year. The weight of goods carried was 21 m tonnes – over 0.2 m tonnes less (-1.2%) compared to 2022. The weight of goods in October is the second highest monthly result since the beginning of this year (with 21.1 m tonnes in March).

The operational performance was over 7.4 m train-km, which is a year-on-year decrease by 0.2 m train-km (-2.3%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 263 km - 4.6 km longer than in 2022.

In October 2023 – on a month-on-month basis – there was an increase by 1.3 m tonnes (+6.5%) in the weight of goods carried since September 2023. The rise in the transport performance was 0.3 bn tonne-km (+5.4%) and 0.4 m train-km (+5.1%) in the operational performance. In October the average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 3 km shorter than in September.

Overall, in January-October 2023 the weight of goods transported by rail operators exceeded 193.9 m tonnes, the transport performance reached 51.8 bn tonne-km and the operational performance amounted to 70.9 m train-km. When compared to the same period in 2022, it is a decrease by 14.7 m tonnes (-7.1%) in the weight of goods, by 0.3 bn tonne-km (-0.6%) in the transport performance and by 1.9 m train-km (-2.5%) in the operational performance.
