Intermodal transport in 1Q 2022

22.06.2022

Nearly 6.6 m tonnes of goods were transported by intermodal rail services in 1Q 2022. The transport performance almost reached 2.1 bn tonne-km. When compared to the same period last year, all intermodal transport parameters increased.

From January to March 2022 rail carriers transported almost 6.6 m tonnes of intermodal freight. If we compare these results with the figures for the same period last year, there was an increase in weight by more than 0.3 m tonnes (+5.4%). The transport performance amounted to almost 2.1 bn tonne-km and increased by more than 0.2 bn tonne-km (+10.8%). In 1Q 2022 rail carriers transported more than 466 thous. units, which was nearly 751 thous. TEU. When compared to 1Q 2021, the number of units transported increased by 11.3% (in TEU by 9.2%). The share of intermodal transport services in the rail freight market reached 10.6% (in weight) and 14.4% (in transport performance).

Intermodal transport has been growing steadily. In 2020-2021 - despite the restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic - intermodal transport parameters rose. Now, with the war across the eastern border, it is reasonable to ask how it will affect intermodal transport. In 1Q 2022 in intermodal traffic we saw increases in all parameters compared to the same period in 2021. Intermodal transport is not only on the New Silk Road, for us it is important to ensure proper access to seaports, which will largely determine the potential of containerised traffic. The intermodal rail market still has potential, but the emphasis must be placed on the development of logistics processes and their speed - comments Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

In 1Q 2022, intermodal rail transport services were performed by 20 licensed carriers.
