Intermodal transport in the second quarter of 2020

28.09.2020

Intermodal transport in the second quarter of 2020 (2Q) reached nearly 5.5 m tonnes. The transport performance amounted to nearly 1.8 bn tonne-km. It is the highest number in intermodal transport achieved so far. In comparison to 2Q 2019 all parameters for intermodal transport in 2Q 2020 improved.

In 2Q 2020 railway carriers transported almost 378,000 units, what constituted over 597,000 TEU. Again in comparison to 2Q 2019 this number rose by 13.3% (and accordingly by 16.8% TEU).

The total weight transported in 2Q 2020 reached nearly 5.5 m tonnes. Over the last few years the share of intermodal transport in rail freight steadily grows. In 2011 it was less than 2.4% in total weight transported and 4.5% in transport performance. In the first half of 2020 it was 10.4% and 14.4% respectively.

- All parameters for intermodal transport in 1Q and 2Q 2020 show a visible increase as compared to the same period of the previous year. It is quite optimistic result, keeping in mind that we are in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic and railway sector is heavily hit by it - comments Ignacy Góra, the President of the Office of Rail Transport. - However, this type of transport has potential to show us even more dynamic growth. Thus, it is important to continue to improve the state of railway infrastructure, ensure equal conditions rail and road transport, and, of course, implement of our long-standing concept of ‘trucks on tracks’ - he adds.

In the 2Q 2020 19 licensed railway carriers provided intermodal services.

The quarterly data on intermodal rail transport are available on our website in Rail freight statistics section.
