Freight railway transport in September of 2019

31.10.2019

19.6 million tonnes of goods were transported in September of 2019 , transport service amounted to 4.6 tonne-kilometres and operational service – to 6.7 train-kilometres. These values were lower by 4.7%, 8.5% and 10.4% respectively than in September of 2018.

Since January until the end of September of 2019 freight carriers transported 178 million tonnes of goods, i.e. more than 4.9% less than in September of 2018. And transport service reached the level of 42.9 tonne-kilometres as well as 61.7 million train-kilometres, a decrease by 4.9% and 6.1% respectively in comparison to the same period of last year.

The results for three quarters of 2019 show lower freight transport values than last year. – The biggest impact on the decrease in freight transport, according to all available data, was resulted by lower number of transport of goods in the construction, energy and heavy industry sectors. Performance of freight carriers in their traditional role, as undertakings offering freight transfer of bulk goods, depends largely on the course of large infrastructural projects or the needs of the energy sector. That’s why it is so important to create new possibilities for the use of freight railway transport – sums up Mr. Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

An average distance of transfer of 1 tonne of goods by freight carriers amounted in September of 2019 to 234 kilometres and was lower by almost 10 kilometres in comparison to the same period of last year.
