02.06.2023

In April 2023 30.1 m passengers travelled by rail and more than 18 m tonnes of goods were carried. Compared to April 2022 the number of passengers increased by 11.7% and the weight of goods dropped by 15.3%.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

Almost 30.1 m passengers used rail services in April 2023, which is an increase by 3.2 m passengers (+11.7%) compared to April 2022. The transport performance reached over 2 bn pass-km and was 0.2 bn pass-km higher (10.8%) than in April 2022. An increase was recorded in the operational performance, which amounted to 15.2 m train-km - 0.3 m train-km more (+1.8%) year-on-year. The parameters analysed: the number of passengers, the transport and operational performance in April 2023 are the highest values recorded so far in April since 2012. The average distance travelled by a rail passenger in April 2023 was 66.8 km - 0.5 km shorter than in April 2022.

The values of passenger numbers and operational performance in April 2023 were slightly lower than in March 2023. Overall, 1.1 m fewer passengers were transported (-3.4%) and the operational performance was 0.5 m train-km lower (-3.3%). In the transport performance there was an increase by over 0.1 bn pass-km (+7.7%) on a month-on-month basis. The average distance travelled by a passenger was also longer by 6.9 km (+11.5%) compared to March 2023.

Both the transport performance and the average distance travelled in April are so far the highest values achieved in monthly statistics since the beginning of this year. In the case of long-distance carrier PKP Intercity, April was the best month of 2023 in terms of both the transport performance and the number of passengers carried.

Since the beginning of 2023 more than 118 m passengers used rail services, the transport performance reached 7.5 bn pass-km and the operational performance was 61.9 m train-km. Compared to the same period in 2022, it is almost 20.2 m more passengers (+20.6%), 1.2 bn more pass-km (+19%) in the transport performance and 0.9 m more train-km (+1.4%) in the operational performance.

The transport performance amounted to 4.9 bn tonne-km, down by 0.3 bn tonne-km (-6.5%) compared to April 2022. In the operational performance, which was 6.8 m train-km , the drop was 0.5 m (-6.6%). The average transport distance of 1 tonne of goods was 272 km, 26 km longer than in April 2022.

April 2023 was not so good for most freight carriers on a month-on-month basis as well. Compared to March 2023 3.1 m tonnes of goods less were carried (-14.5%), the transport performance was 0.6 bn tonne-km lower (-10.9%) and the operational performance fell by 0.7 m train-km (-9.8%). However, the average transport distance of 1 tonne of goods was longer by 11 km compared to March 2023.

The values of weight of goods carried, transport performance and operational performance in April were the worst in 2023 so far.

Overall, in the first four months of 2023, the weight of goods carried amounted to 78.4 m tonnes, the transport performance reached 20.9 bn tonne-km and the operational performance was 28.6 m train-km. Compared to the same period in 2022, there were 5.1 m tonnes of goods less (-6.2%) carried, the transport performance was 1.1 bn tonne-km lower (-5.3%) and the operational performance rose by 0.34 m (+1.2%).
