Rail transport in February 2023

In February 2023 more than 27.3 m passengers used rail services and almost 19 m tonnes of goods were carried by rail companies. On a year-on-year basis it is an increase by 28.5% in passenger numbers and a decrease by 4.3% in freight weight.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In February over 27.3 m passengers travelled on the trains of 17 licensed passenger carriers. Compared to February 2022, it is 6.1 m passengers (+28.5%) more. The transport performance was 1.8 bn pass-km was realised, which is 0.4 bn pass-km more (+33%) year-on-year. There was also a slight increase in the operational performance, which amounted to 14.8 m train-km in February 2023 - 0.4 m (+2.9%) more than a year earlier. The average distance travelled by a passenger in February was 64.9 km - 2.2 km more (+3.5%) than in February 2022.

February is the shortest month of the year, so for carriers providing regular passenger services, it means a decrease in the number of passengers on a month-on-month basis. Compared to January 2023, rail services were used by 2.3 m fewer passengers (-7.7%), the transport performance was 0.1 bn pass-km lower (-5.2%) and the operational performance was lower by 1.4 m train-km (-8.7%). The average distance travelled by a passenger rose by 2 km (+2.8%) compared to January 2023.

In total, in the first two months of 2023, rail companies carried 56.9 m passengers, the transport performance was 3.6 bn pass-km and the operational performance was 30.9 m train-km.

Compared to the same period in 2022, there were 14.2 m more passengers (+33.4%), the transport performance increased by 1 bn (+37.8%) and the operational performance by 1 m (+3.2%).

RAIL FREIGHT

In February 2023 the weight of goods transported by rail companies reached a slightly lower value than in 2022. 19 m tonnes of goods were transported by train – just under 0.9 m less (-4.3%) than in February 2022. However, higher values were recorded for other parameters. The transport performance stood at 5.1 bn tonne-km and was 0.6 bn (+12.7%) higher than in February 2022. The operational performance reached 7 m train-km, 0.5 m (+7.3%) more than a year earlier. The average transport distance of 1 tonne of goods in February 2023 was 270 km, which was 40.7 km longer (+17.8%) than in February 2022.

In February 2023, compared to January 2023, the total weight of goods carried was down by 1.4 m tonnes (-6.8%), the transport performance was 0.3 bn (-5.1%) lower and the operational performance was 0.4 m (-5.1%) lower. There was a slight increase in the average transport distance of 1 tonne of goods by 4.8 km (+1.8%) as compared to January 2023.

Since the beginning of this year, 39.3 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail, the transport performance reached 10.5 bn tonne-km and the operational performance amounted to 14.3 m train-km.

Compared to the same period in 2022, it was a drop by 0.2 m tonnes (-0.4%) in the total weight of goods carried, an increase by 1.4 bn tonnes (+15.1%) in the transport performance and by 1.1 m (+8.5%) in the operational performance.
