01.04.2022

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In February 21.2 m passengers travelled by train. When compared to February 2021, it is an increase by 6.99 m passengers (+49%). The transport performance amounted to 1.33 bn pass-km, which is an increase by 485 m pass-km (+57%). The operational performance reached 14.3 m train-km and was 0.8 m train-km higher (+5.9%) than in February 2021. The average distance travelled by a passenger was 62.9 km, which is 3.2 km longer (+5.32%) than last year.

When we compare February 2022 to January 2022, there is a slight decrease by 0.16 m passengers (-0.8%) in the number of passengers carried. The transport performance rose by 25.9 m pass-km (+2%). The operational performance was 1.3 m train-km (-8.2%) lower when compared to the previous month. The average distance travelled by a passenger was 1.7 km longer (+2.8%) compared to January 2022.

In February 2022 an increase in the number of rail passengers month-on-month was recorded by the long-distance rail carrier PKP Intercity and several regional carriers: Polregio, Koleje Wielkopolskie, Koleje Dolnośląskie, Koleje Małopolskie, Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa and Arriva RP. However, the results of these carriers did not affect the overall increase in passenger numbers when compared to January this year.

In February 2022 in rail passenger transport we see improvements in all parameters comparing year-on-year. The results of long-distance carriers were certainly influenced by the winter holidays in February. Despite remote work in offices and the number of quarantined people, good results were also recorded by several regional carriers. Having in mind the situation on our eastern border, it is difficult to forecast the next months results in rail transport. However, there is no doubt that the role of rail carriers in evacuating people from Ukraine is extremely important - emphasises Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.
