Rail transport in November 2021

07.01.2022

In November 2021 25.1 m passengers travelled by rail, which is 12.7 m more than in November 2020. 22.3 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail - 1.6 m tonnes more than in November 2020.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

Data collected from rail carriers show that in November 2021 the number of rail passengers amounted to 25.1 m. When compared to November 2020, it is an increase by over 12.7 m people (+102%). The transport performance was 1.5 bn pass-km (+115.1%) and the operational performance reached 14.6 m train-km (+5.1%). The average distance travelled by a passenger was 58 km, which was 3.5 km more than in November 2020 (+6.5%).

When compared to October 2021, 1.9 m passengers less travelled by rail (-7%), the transport performance was lower by 146.6 m pass-km (-9.1%) and the operational performance was lower by 503 thous. train-km (-3%). The average distance travelled by a passenger was 1.4 km shorter than in October 2021.

In November the majority of passenger carriers experienced visible slowdowns. We saw a similar trend in November 2020 and 2019. Despite the difficult epidemic situation, rail passenger transport is recovering - now we have over 100% increases compared to the same period last year - says Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

In November 2021 – when compared to November 2019, so the period before the outbreak of the pandemic - 15% passengers less were transported by rail, the transport performance was 17% lower and the operational performance was 4% higher. The average distance travelled by a passenger in November 2021 was 2 km shorter than in November 2019.

RAIL FREIGHT

In November 2021 the weight of transported goods amounted to 22.3 m tonnes and increased by 1.6 m tonnes (+7.9%) as compared to November 2020. The transport performance was also higher than in 2020 and reached almost 5 bn tonne-km, which was an increase by 154.5 m tonne-km (+3.2%). The operational performance was 7.0 m train-km, which was a decrease by 0.1 m train-km (-1.4%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 10 km shorter than in November 2020.

When we look at the total weight of transported loads, November 2021 turned out better than October by 0.2 m tonnes (1.1%). However, the transport performance decreased to 181 m tonne-km (-3.5%), while the operational performance was lower by 0.4 m train-km (-5.4%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was shorter by 11 km.

An increase in industrial production in November - mostly in industrial processing and automotive industry - led to a significant rise in the weight of transported goods. The colder season was also responsible for a higher fuel extraction, which is reflected in rail transport results. It also seems that a tense situation on the eastern border of Poland did not affect intermodal transport as it was initially predicted - comments Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

The total weight of goods transported from January to November 2021 was higher by over 20.5 m tonnes (10%) than during the same period in 2020. Similarly, the transport performance was higher by over 3.6 bn tonne-km (+7.6%) and the operational performance by 4.7 m train-km (+6.7%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods in this period in 2021 was 229 km and 5 km shorter than in 2020.
