Train punctuality in 2Q 2021

13.08.2021

In 2Q 2021 over 92% of passenger trains and over 43% of freight trains arrived on time at their destination. When compared to 1Q 2021 punctuality improved - for passenger trains it was slightly over 90% and for freight trains less than 43%. In 2Q 2021 rail operators launched over 426 thous. passenger trains and over 111 thous. freight trains.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

From April to June 2021 92.03% of passenger trains arrived on time at their final destination (delays were over 5 minutes 59 seconds). When compared to 1Q, it is an increase by over 1.5%. The highest punctuality rate for passenger trains in 2Q was recorded in April - 94.01%. In May it reached 92.62% and in June - 89.48%.

Among passenger carriers which run more than a thousand trains per month, the highest punctuality rate in 2Q was recorded by WKD, the Warsaw Commuter Railway - 99.68%. For the largest long-distance carrier, PKP Intercity, the punctuality rate was 78.01%. The average quarterly train delay was over 20 minutes for trains delayed over 5 minutes 59 seconds and almost 8 minutes for all trains.

In 2Q 2021 most common reasons for delays were repairs or replacement of rolling stock because of failures. In April and June late notification of readiness for departure was a relevant reason for delays, while from May bad weather conditions had a serious impact on punctuality. Other causes of delays were: improper organization of rail infrastructure construction works, suicides and accidents.

- Rolling stock failures and late notification of readiness for departure are reasons directly connected to railway carriers. To increase punctuality we should address these are issues. Unfortunately, bad organization of construction works is still one of the reasons for delays. Better planning of works can improve punctuality - points out Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport

RAIL FREIGHT

In 2Q 2021 43.34% of freight trains arrived on time at their final destination. The highest punctuality rate was recorded in April - 45.19%. In May the rate was 43.23%, while in June it was 41.56%. The average delay of a freight train in 2Q was 693 minutes.
