January 2020 transfer service results

Over two million passengers more than a year before - that's the result of passenger carriers' performance in January of 2020. Operational and transfer service also rising. Freight transfer service has however witnessed a decline.

In the first month of 2020 almost 28,6 million passengers travelled by rail, which means a rise by 7.7% in comparison to January of 2019. Transfer service amounted to more than 1.7 billion passenger-kilometres and operational service - to almost 15.4 million train-kilometres. These values were higher by 5.8% and 6.6% respectively. 

The January data shows that the 2019/2020 timetable has brought a rise of the numbers of transport services, as provided by some carriers. Higher operational service was noted by PKP Intercity, Koleje Wielkopolskie and Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna. Average distance travelled by one passenger in January amounted to 60 km. - The offer of railway services has become more attractive for the passengers. There are more trains and I am certain that the entire year 2020 should bring growth in the number of railway passengers - foresees Mr. Ignacy Góra, Ph.D., the President of the Office of Rail Transport.

Freight transfers

Freight carriers transported more than 17 million tonnes of goods in January of 2020. This means a decline by 12.9% in comparison to the corresponding period of last year. Transfer and operational service amounted to 3.9 billion tonne-kilometres and 5.9 million train-kilometres, which means lower figures by 14.6% and 12.2% respectively.

Average travel distance of freight transfers in January of 2020 amounted to 227 km and was lower by almost 4 km.
