Passenger transport in the first half of 2019

01.08.2019

In the first half of this year the railway carriers transported over 161 million passengers. In each month of 2019 the number of passengers was higher than in the previous year, and the largest number of passengers occurred in March, May and June. This indicates a steady upward trend in Poland as regards travelling by railway.

During the first six months of the year the total increase in the number of passengers amounted to over 7% (by over 9 million passengers) in comparison to the previous year. Transport performance for this period rose to 10.4 billion passenger-kilometres and increased by more than 5% (over 0.5 billion passenger-kilometres), while operational performance of 83.2 million train-kilometres meant increase by 2.3% (1.9 million train-kilometres).
In June of 2019 the number of passengers carried by railway stood at the level of over 27.3 million, 5.3% more than in June of 2018. Transport operations amounted to 1.9 billion passenger-kilometres and operational performance to 13.8 million train-kilometres. These figures were respectively 4.8% and 2.5% higher than in June of the previous year.
“The transport results for the first half of the year are optimistic. Over 7%-increase in the number of passengers means that the year may end with the result of 330 million passengers who chose railway services” comments Ignacy Góra, President of the Urząd Transportu Kolejowego.
Long distance holiday trips usually start in June. The average distance travelled by one passenger increased to 70 km, which means the increase by 4 km in relation to the previous month.
