Regulations regarding the knowledge of the railway track

29.07.2019

Office of Rail Transport (Urząd Transportu Kolejowego, UTK) dispels doubts with regard to the acquiring, losing and regaining the knowledge of railway lines’ sections, known commonly as “knowledge of the railway track”.

The regulations regarding the knowledge and skills of a train driver have changed as at the end of the previous year an amendment to the directive of the Minister of Infrastructure and Construction of 19 December 2017 on the train driver’s certificate was adopted.

Polish legal regulations currently in effect do not specify the matters related to the knowledge of railway lines’ sections. These matters should be precisely described by internal regulations of railway carriers or railway infrastructure managers. The President of UTK has prepared a position on the acquiring, losing and regaining the knowledge of railway lines’ sections, the Polish version of which is available on the website of UTK.

The main recommendations stemming from the position are as follows:

1. in order to acquire knowledge of a new section of a railway line or after any absence of a train driver on a given railway line section, that has lasted longer than 3 years, it is recommended to have him/her hold at least four drives on that section, whereas two of those should take place between dusk and dawn, if possible;

2. after any absence of a train driver on a given section of a railway line, that has lasted longer than 1 year, he/she should hold at least two drives on that section in a valid cockpit of a railway vehicle with a drive, whereas, if possible, one drive should be held between dusk and dawn;

3. the rules governing the acquiring, keeping and renewing the knowledge of railway lines’ sections should be described in internal regulations of the railway carriers or infrastructure managers.
