Rail passenger transport in Polish regions in 3Q 2023

03.01.2024

In 3Q 2023 the highest number of passengers used rail services in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, with a share of 24.5% of passengers checked in. However, this result is lower than a year ago. On the second place was the Pomorskie Voivodeship. In 3Q 2023 the number of passengers was the highest so far this year – it reached 94.5 m.

In 3Q 2023 94.5 m passengers used rail services. It is 3.6 m (3.9%) more than last year. The rail passenger volumes rose in the majority of Polish regions. Lower volumes of passengers were only recorded in the Mazowieckie (-1.8 m), Świętokrzyskie and Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeships (-40 thousand each). For the second consecutive year the highest growth dynamics can be seen in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship (29.3%), followed by the Małopolskie Voivodeship (18%) and the Lubelskie Voivodeship (10.5%). In two voivodeships the rise in the number of passengers exceeded 1 m. These were the Pomorskie (1.4 m) and Małopolskie (1.1 m) Voivodeships. The regions with the highest number of passengers were the Mazowieckie (23.2 m), Pomorskie (19.4 m) and Wielkopolskie Voivodeships (8.5 m). For most regions, it was the best quarter after the pandemic.

Of all 16 regions, the Mazowieckie Voivodeship has the largest share of passengers checked in. In 3Q 2023 almost ¼ of all travellers in Poland were checked in in this voivodeship (24.5% share, a decrease by 2.9 pp). The second voivodeship, Pomorskie, has a share of 20.6%. In this case, the share rose by 0.8 pp. The share of the remaining regions did not exceed a double-digit figure. In seven voivodeships this parameter dropped.

The rail transport usage rate, calculated as the quotient of all passengers transported in July-September 2023 and the number of inhabitants of the country (data from the Central Statistical Office), was 2.5. It means that the average inhabitant of Poland used the rail transport on average 2.5 times in 3Q 2023. Compared to 3Q 2022, the rate rose by 0.1. By voivodeship, the rate rose in 13 regions. Drops were recorded in the Mazowieckie (-0.32), Świętokrzyskie (-0.03) and Zachodniopomorskie (-0.01) Voivodeships. The highest increase in the rail transport usage rate was recorded in the Pomorskie Voivodeship (+0.61). In three voivodeships the rail transport usage rate in 3Q 2023 was above the average. These were the Pomorskie (8.24), Mazowieckie (4.21) and Dolnośląskie (3.15) Voivodeships.

Compared to 2Q 2023, the number of passengers increased by 0.9 m (0.9%) in 3Q 2023. The most significant increase - from 6.1 m to 7.1 m (16.8%) - was in the Małopolskie Voivodeship, while a decrease in the number of passengers was recorded in six voivodeships. The rail transport usage rate rose by 0.02 (from 2.48 to 2.50) in 3Q 2023 compared to 2Q 2023, while an increase by voivodeship was recorded in 10 of them.
